I lived in Florida for 8 or 9 years but have never heard of this actually…

But technically Florida isn't “the South.”

I don't like sweet foods to be mixed with my fried chicken though…

とにかく・・太りそうなメニュー・・でも、~体に悪いものほど・うまいのですよねえ・・（例：フライドチキン・フライドポテトに甘いワッフル！そしてビール）
砂糖・油・肉・アルコール！それらは体に悪いものばっかり！
でも、うまいのよね・・いつもたのしみにみてます。uplodadまってますね。

"First time I heard of chicken and waffles"は｢続く感じ｣ですか。
過去の時点のことだから、それがいつの事なのか説明したい感じですかねぇ。
僕はなんだかこの文は"I heard"が文脈上（contextから）ちょっとだけ
うまくいってないような（少しミスマッチ）感覚も持っています。
文としてはもちろん、正しい文だと思いますが、ちょっとスラング気味なんですね。
日本語に訳すなら、｢"chicken and waffles"の噂を聞いたのは初めての事でしたねぇ。｣
となると思います。

"First time I’ve heard of chicken and waffles."だと話題が手元にある感じ？でしょうか。
日本語に訳すと、｢"chicken and waffles"なんて噂聞いたのは初めてのことだよ。｣
確かにこの2つの文章は感覚が違うけど、意味は似ていますね。

KFCのビスケットはちょっとおかしいですね．．．私はケンタッキーのマッシュポテトが大好きですが。日本でマッシュポテトがなさそうね。子供の時に時々ケンタッキーとご飯を食べまして、本当に美味しかった。完璧なコンボです。

一つの質問：バナナ×ハムは何ですか？聞いたことないけど、美味しそう！どこで見つけられるんでしょうか？

"First time I heard of chicken and waffles"の方がね．．．この文章は「続く感じ」がある（へんな日本語ごめんね）。

"First time I heard of chicken and waffles [was when I went to Gussies]"

でも、両方の文章はほぼ同じです。"First time I heard of chicken and waffles"の方がいいやすいと思いますが（ちょっとだけスラングかな？）。
